Community Bulletin #1
OUR SCHOOL BUILDINGS:

IN DESPERATE NEED OF ATTENTION

Our Elementary Schools are over 100 years old on average, among the oldest in the entire state.  They are too old to renovate and simply not adequate for today’s needs:

  • Due to the lack of space, special needs students and staff must frequently work in noisy and distracting locations such as converted coat closets, stairway landings and hallways.
  • None of our elementary school classrooms are wired for the Internet, an increasingly important teaching tool.   By comparison, 93% of elementary school instructional rooms are wired nationally.  We are leaving our children behind.
  • Two of the three elementary schools do not have a proper gymnasium or cafeteria.
  • Children and teachers at Maple School must gather in the basement for school-wide events, and must sit on the floor.  There are asbestos covered pipes in the basement, where indoor recess is also held.
  • Parking is inadequate at each school, creating inconvenience and safety risks.

Easthampton High School is now over 40 years old and in need of critical upgrades to bring it in line with current standards.  For example:

  • There is great concern that inadequate facilities and limited access to technology will jeopardize the high school’s accreditation, which would impact our students’ chances for college acceptance.
  • Today’s high school students require frequent access to computers.  The current computer lab is inadequate and cannot be used by students throughout the day due to lack of space – it must be used as a classroom.
  • There is also inadequate space for staff.   Guidance staff, the vice principal and office staff are located in cramped, closet like spaces and converted restrooms.
  • The library is too small, outdated and inadequate.
  • There is no auditorium to house school events, assemblies and productions.

There is never a “good time” to spend money, but there is a “right time.”

And the right time is now for Easthampton Schools
