An open letter to the Citizens of Easthampton:

Having lived in Easthampton all of our lives, we have seen our home go through many economic and social changes.  We are now a city with a bright and diverse future, but hold tight to our proud roots as a manufacturing town.  In a world full of choices, Easthampton is where we all choose to make our homes and raise our families for the quality of life, the natural beauty and the salt-of-the-earth people that make Easthampton great.

Recent years have seen what is described as the “Easthampton renaissance”, as our home continues to evolve and diversify.  Easthampton has made great gains in the local economy, downtown district, historical and land preservations, cultural and artistic venues, aquifer protection, public safety upgrades and neighborhood developments.  While the state economy and municipal funding have suffered over the last 3 years, to its credit Easthampton continues to move forward in all these wonderful ways.  The one area of Easthampton that has lacked significant enhancements, and yet remains the key to true long-term, economic development is our public school system.

All public school systems and their students must now compete in the modern world of education.  This new-world includes competition in the form of choice and charter schools, technology based learning, high risk standardized testing, and an ever-shrinking world where information flows faster and our children compete on an international basis.  Yet in Easthampton, we ask our children and teachers to compete with little to no technology and in facilities that go back to and are equipped for the late 1800’s.  The competitive disadvantage placed on our children is just overwhelming by 21st century standards.

We ask all of Easthampton, young and senior, fellow life-long residents as well as those new to our city, to join us in supporting the first steps of modernizing the Easthampton schools by voting yes on November 8th.  Without this vital investment we limit the future of our children and of our home community.  Let’s keep Easthampton on the rise and secure its future on November 8th.
