To The Editor,

We have three children who are currently attending public school in Easthampton and we have been more than satisfied with the quality of the education that they are receiving.  The teachers and staff are knowledgeable, caring, and genuinely invested in the overall well-being of the children.  But, to be truly effective, the teachers need the support of the community, and in recent years it does not appear that they have it.  Budget cuts and rejected overrides have sent the message that Easthampton does not see public education as a high priority, causing negative perceptions and forcing some families to make other out-of-town choices.

How can Easthampton continue to grow and thrive when children are not valued and given the opportunities that they need to compete in the “real world”? How can Easthampton justify letting our children ‘slip through the cracks’?  A new elementary school and a renovated high school are essential to Easthampton’s commitment to educate and essential to the overall renaissance of this city. It is time for the citizens of Easthampton to make a commitment to the future of our youth, to support our teachers, and to dispel all negative perceptions of Easthampton once and for all.

Please join us in voting ‘yes’ on the School Override Question on November 8th.
